TYNECASTLE FC have paid tribute to a club stalwart by launching an initiative thought to be a football first.
From next season, players of all Tynecastle teams will wear the name of Jimmy Lynch on the front of their shirts instead of a sponsor, following the passing of the club's long-serving former administrator and secretary in February this year. Lynch lost his fight with cancer after decades dedicated to serving youth football in the Capital, most notably at Tynie but also at Cavalry Park and Salvesen Boys' Club, also serving for a time as secretary of the governing East Region Youth Football Association.
Following Jimmy's death, his brother Peter and sisters Maureen and Liz were bowled over by the gesture offered by Tynecastle club Chairman Dougie Dalgleish.
Mr Dalgleish said: "We wanted to do something different. Our two-year sponsorship deal was coming to an end, but talks with other potential sponsors stopped once we had this idea. The shirt with Jimmy's name on the front will be replicated for all the boys in our 22 teams to wear – that's around 350 boys.
"The players really took Jimmy to their hearts. Many of them went to his funeral and, when one of them scored the winning goal in the under-19 League Cup final, he took off his shirt and had a t-shirt underneath saying, 'This one's for you, Jimmy'. That was the boys' idea.
"The way the boys thought of him shows that Jimmy was such a big character and had presence; he wasn't just someone shouting – the boys knew he was 100 per cent behind them."
Many sports teams have retired squad numbers as a nod to the efforts of individuals who have left an enduring mark on their history, but it is thought that having the name of a former club servant in place of a sponsor is a unique mark of respect.
Jimmy's brother Peter Lynch said: "We are gobsmacked. Not only did Jimmy give long service to Tynecastle, he was involved with Royston Rosemary, Cavalry Park and Salvesen.
"He received a long service award from the Scottish Youth Football Association recently for his 25 years in the game."
The Tynecastle Club will stage a cabaret evening to raise funds for Ward 4 at the Western General Hospital, whose staff looked after Jimmy latterly. It takes place on Friday, 24 September at Shrubhill Masonic Club, with tickets costing £15 available from Dougie Dalgleish on 0131 441 4146 or 07931 140 724
